Meeting the mosaics

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

You know those days when you're out and about, minding your own business on your way from A to B, when suddenly you stumble upon a completely unexpected sight that catches your eye and captures your heart?

Whale-shaped stone structure

Earlier this week on my way home from a gym session in my local area, I took a shortcut through the backstreets and saw something on Gambia Street that stopped me in my tracks.

Peppered all over three stone structures (which always make me think of whales) were lots of tiny, beautifully-made mosaics (pictured below). Not seeing an artist credit, I contacted London School of Mosaic, who sent me a lovely reply confirming that these are mosaic accents which were made by Tamara Froud.

The London School of Mosaic website also has lots of interesting information about the school's history, social mission and valuable work in communities and the public realm.

I was particularly thrilled to find two mosaics that by chance reflect the name of my website!

Seeing these tiny new works of art reminded me of some photos I had taken several years ago in the gardens of St John's Church Waterloo. I believe they were also made by Southbank Mosaics. Take a look at this stunning creature sitting on a pedestal, and the seating area captured on a particularly rainy day.

And finally, a few more mosaics sited on the whales:
